MY OWN LITTLE WORLDSPAN>

Lyrics

Liner Notes

I look around at everything I see
But nothing seems all that strange to me
It's a creation of my own design
A perfect combination of the heart and mind

No walls to hold me, not a fence in sight
It's free and easy, just the way I like
I know if from the bottom to the top
I guess I should because I made it up

The babies never scream, The money grows on trees
There's always service with a smile
There's no politics, The faucet never drips
Underneath the bluest sky

Up is down and wrong is right
Red is Black and Blue is White
It's unlike anything that you ever heard
I'm just living in my own little world, living in my own little world

Everything is in it's special place
There's no sense of any time or space
No one could ever hurt or bother me
In my own little world

And you can say goodbye to all the woe and strife
Because there ain't no sorrow here
All people live in peace, we got all we need
It's like a paradise in here

In is out and left is right
Hot is cold and wet is dry
It's unlike anything that you ever heard
I'm just living in my own little world, living in my own little world

It never gets too hot, you never catch a cold
And there's a party every night
The music never stops, we boogie till we drop
And dancing till the morning light

Up is down and wrong is right
Red is Black and Blue is White
It's unlike anything that you ever heard
I'm just living in my own little world

Near is far and low is high
Good is bad and dark is light
Unlike anything that you ever heard
I'm just living in my own little world
Welcome to my own little world

BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Chris St.Croix had written these lyrics for a mid-tempo country song that we recorded in my basement in 1998 when I lived in Nashville. Once we had a basic guitar/vocal demo written, he had the idea to do a fun upbeat version for a film placement opportunity. The goal was a quirky piano ditty that might fit a Randy Newman style. I came up with the piano chords and rhythems and Chris sang this melody line. I added some cheesey drums (by playing them on a keyboard) and played a bass track. It was a fun rough demo that never really went anywhere or got played for anyone, but I always thought it was a cool song.

Fast forward to 2018 and my 14-piece band Spark Jack Daddy (SJD) gets a gig opening the McDowell Mountain Music Festival in Phoenix, Arizona. We play mostly covers, but for this gig we had to include some originals. I dusted off this demo and sent it to the band and it was a perfect fit and we played it during that show.

I had hoped that SJD might go into the studio to record the song, but in 2020 I decided to record my own demo of the song. Having a "real" piano was the first track that made it sound more legit. I then asked SJD drummer Ryan Eibling to play drums on the track and found James Hodsonaust on Fiverr to play all of the horn parts that I wrote for the song. I did a new guitar and bass tracks and then sang all of the vocals...however, the one little "Ooooo" at the middle break is from Chris's original vocal take and I thought it would be fun to keep it in there.
