There are 63 national parks in the United States and I've only been to 15 of them, including my recent trip to Yosemite National Park in California. It was clear to see why this one is usually ranked in top 5 with all of the soaring granite facades and cascading waterfalls all around. I was on a bus tour that only gave me about 6 hours to take in as much beauty as I could and capture as many pictures as time allowed. The bus dropped us off at some great vantage points of El Capitan, Half Dome, Mirror Lake, and Yosemite Falls, plus the panoramic view of everything from the Tunnel View lookout. Wow, what a country!
It had been 25 years since my first visit to Tonto Natural Bridge. I did take some photos in 2001 using an SLR camera and slide film, but none of the pictures compared to what I was able to capture this time. I chose the Gowan trail to go under the bridge and it proved to be a bit harder than I had hoped for, but it was worth the effort. I must admit that I didn't quite make it the whole way under the 400 foot tunnel and had to turn back...I was so close, but I knew I had reached my limits and it was very slippery! I do feel fortunate that I at least made it into the 'cave' and get some cool pictures looking out.
Tonto Natural Bridge is located near Payson, Arizona and is the largest natural travertine bridge in the world. It was $10 to get in and there are several trails available to hike. I look forward to going back to check out the other trails when I have more time.
I woke up at 3:45am to go to a couple of sites in Tempe to get some photos of the lunar eclipse on March 3rd. Luckily a lunar eclipse lasts a bit longer than a solar eclipse so I was able to drive to a couple of locations. First up was Gammage Auditorium since I have been gathering quite a few Frank Lloyd Wright architectural buildings. My favorite shot was looking through the loops on the decorative staircase. I've also been getting quite a collection of images of pyramids, so I next traveled over to the Tempe Municipal Building which is an upside down pyramid. I wrapped up my tour with a shot of the Roosevelt water feature at The Grand at Papago Park Center which is an award winning lighting project that I designed. As you can see, the eclipse was coming to an end by the time I got to this point.
