I don't do many bodypaintings anymore, but when I do I try to make them as epic as possible. This year at Phoenix Fan Fusion, I once again hosted the Bodypainting Extravaganza and I decided this year's theme would have a horror concept. I remembered a live album from Black Sabbath that was called Live Evil and I noticed that it had the same letters spelled backwards and forwards. Working from that concept, I came up with the palindrome EvilAlivE and took it one step farther by making an ambigram logo that looks identical in a mirror. Our team of 5 artists and 5 models were half veterans of the show (me and teams 'Brandy Wise with Heather Renee Nance' (pictured with antlers) and 'Carrie Esser with Natalie Wood' (pictured with hatchet) and half were 1st time guests (teams 'Jess Kelly with Faith Watson' (pictured with wings) and husband/wife team of 'Jason and Shelby McMahon' (scary clown), and my model Stephanie Daigle (pictured with scythe). The artists and models brought creepy evil to a new level and nailed the theme! Here are a few of the edited photos from EvilAlivE. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported this form of art that AI hasn't gotten to yet...live traditional art! I also want to thank my assistants, Stephanie's friend Paloma Eivazians who did her makeup and Sav Greenawalt. They probably painted more of her body than I did! For my project I used ShowOffs Body Art / ProAiir Hybrid Makeup for the 'dead' color airbrush paint, Smooth-On Skin-tite and slic pig for the SPFX exposed muscles, and Mouth FX for the black teeth and tongue paint! Should we do it again next year?
There are 63 national parks in the US. They are deemed some of the most beautiful places in the world so as a nature/landscape photographer I hope to get to most, if not all of them eventually. In June, I checked off number 15 as I traveled to Death Valley National Park in California, the largest park in the lower 48 and supposedly the hottest point on Earth. It didn't reach the record of 134 degrees while I was there, but 118 degrees felt plenty hot enough. This first picture is from my first stop there at Zabriskie Point and the other photo is a place called Artist Palette. I took some video while I was there and posted it to my Greenawalt Gallery Youtube channel (click the link above). On this, I show more of the other areas like Badwater Basin and the Devils Golfcourse. I tried to walk out into the salt flat at Badwater Basin to see the geometric patterns, but I trudged about a mile and the heat became a concern for me and my age and health so I didn't get far enough to see them. It would have been nice to stay for sunset and the blue hour, but I opted to leave Death Valley in time to head over to see 250th anniversary lighting on the Hoover dam before daylight was totaly gone.
It was an honor to receive the Illumination Award of Distinction at the IES Phoenix Section awards for the Canyon Club at Robson Quail Creek Community. You can see more pictures of this project on Creative Designs in Lighting website. Cudos also to Jen Kelley who designed this with me. The IES Phoenix Section put on a fantastic show this year! This was my 29th IES award! I'm currently working on a new section of my website to showcase my lighting and engineering portfolio throughout my career, but it's still under construction, but coming soon.
