Austin Bat Colony

The swarm of bats that come out from under the Congress Street Bridge in Austin, TX is an incredible thing to see. Just after sunset they fly off into the twilight ‘like bats out of hell.’ There are so many that keep coming out for the spectators on the bridge and in boats below. I had my finger on the trigger (shutter release button) waiting to see the first one fly, and they were already dozens of yards into the sky before I took my first shot. I had to use a flash due to the low light levels and their speed, but it helped to give some depth to the image. Â What a cool experience!
