Lighting Designer Mark Greenawalt, PE

Lighting design engineer Mark Greenawalt graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. Although he was adept at the scientific aspects of circuits, physics, and the mathmatics of engineering, it was the principles of light that sparked his interest. From the quantum physics discussions on wave vs. particle theories to the graduate courses that he took on lasers and holography.

While the left brain is firmly planted on the technical side of lighting, Greenawalt's right brain flourishes with creativity and defines his true artistic side. Using the principles of light and shadow he is adept at drawing and painting, photography and even music. Archetectural lighting is the crossroads where the art and science of lighitng meet.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
"The art of using light to model an architectural space or to illuminate key features within a living environment is both challenging and fulfilling. Lighting design is both an art and a science that incorporates principles of dynamics, color, kinetics, mood, and so many other variables to extract from. It can be theatrical or atmospheric, romantic or energetic, and most projects are comprised of multiple scenes from an unlimited palette of posibilities."

Penn State University BSEE Pennsylvania
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Penn State University 1989 with emphasis on electro-optical engineering, lasers, and holography.
Professional Engineering License in Arizona, Utah, and California.
Professional Engineering (PE) license for the states of Arizona, Utah, and California.

Experience

Chief Electrical Engineer, SmithGroup, Phoenix, AZ (October 2008 – present)
As Chief Electrical Engineer I oversee all of the projects in the Office/Workplace and Higher Education Studios. Design and engineering tasks include the implementation of the electrical systems into the 3-dimensional model utilizing Revit MEP software from AutoDesk. I am directly involved in the management of workload and personnel for multi-million dollar projects and I participate in the marketing and project development. As part of the Documentation Standards Group I help to craft standards and proceedures for the company's 11 offices across the country. Responsibilities include all aspects of project design and delivery including client meetings, design of lighting systems, engineering of electrical systems, product specification, construction administration, and coordination with in-house architectural team and consultant design team.

Lighting Design Engineer, Creative Designs In Lighting, Phoenix, AZ (August 2006 - October 2008)
As a senior lighting designer I had the great pleasure of meeting with clients to brainstorm creative lighting concepts to illuminate high-end architectural structures and then to follow through by developing construction documents and lighting specifications. I drew upon my award winning artistic and theatrical background for the visual aesthetics of lighting design while incorporating my extensive experience in the field of electrical engineering for the technical and scientific knowledge base. I continued to be involved in the marketing aspects of writing proposals, developing marketing materials and the company website, and publication of project images and details. I generated photo realistic renderings using software such as AGI32 and Photoshop and generated photometric analysis studies. Construction administration duties involved site observation visits with interaction with contractor and design team, shop drawing review, and hands-on aim and focus of lighting fixtures at the end of projects.

Vice-President, Sullivan Designs, Inc., Phoenix, AZ (February 2000 – August 2006)
As a principal of this consulting engineering firm my responsibilities included all facets of project management from developing marketing proposals and preparing contracts to tracking billings and analyzing budgets and profits. I was actively involved in all decisions related to company policies, actions, and goals. Management duties included overseeing an electrical department of six employees, hiring/firing personnel as required, and providing guidance to developing designers. I was the electrical engineer of record on approximately 100 projects per year ranging from commercial, educational, and healthcare facilities to high-end resorts and high tech facilities. As part of our marketing effort, I designed a new company logo, initiated a company identity package, and maintained the company website.

Electrical Engineer, I.C. Thomasson Associates, Nashville, TN (October 1995 – February 2000)
I acted as the principle electrical designer on large scale industrial projects including soybean oil refineries, co-generating equipment designs, and central plant process facilities. Skills developed included the preparation of coordination studies, photometric analysis, fault current calculations, and electrical load calculations. A significant amount of experience was gained through hands-on construction administration fieldwork at remote sites in Iowa, Nebraska, and Alabama while engaged in design-build projects.

Electrical Designer, Sullivan-Durand, Inc., Phoenix, AZ (April 1994 – October 1995)
Under the guidance of the senior professional engineer, I was responsible for the design of lighting, power, and special system designs for numerous school and medical office building projects. Skills developed included the selection and specification of appropriate lighting fixtures and electrical gear, correct application of National Electrical Codes, review of shop drawing submittals, and coordination with architectural and other trades.

Engineering Intern, U.S. Government, Various Locations (September 1989 – April 1994)
I was employed by the U.S. Federal Government as a civil service employee at several locations throughout Arizona including Fort Huachuca Army Garrison, Luke Air Force Base, Williams Air Force Base, and the San Carlos Irrigation Project. My duties at the various positions included the electrical design of federal buildings and runway lighting, contract management, field inspection, cost estimating, environmental remediation, and energy management.

Software

REVIT MEP, AutoCAD, AGI32, Microsoft Office, Photoshop CS, Dreamweaver, and Adobe Reader (Other significant programs I am experienced with include Power Tools, Word Perfect Suite, Excel and QuatroPro, Access, dBase, Qpanel, Front Page, Lite-Pro, Visual, Microstation, and SimCAD).
