I'd like to invite you to an
event that you won't soon forget. There is an art museum in downtown
Phoenix called the Alwun House and every
year they put on a month-long art show that includes art, photography, and
"envelope-pushing" live entertainment. I'm very proud to say
that I will be a part of this unique event this year as I will be showcasing my
bodypainting art form on the opening night extravaganza on February 9th starting
at 7:00 p.m. Kay Kochman, who was the model for the queen of spades
bodypainting, will be painted prior to the show as the queen of hearts and she
will be presiding over the opening ceremonies. The very talented graphic
artist, David Coven, has designed the invitations to the event using one of the
pictures of Kay (in the queen of spades paint) and "doctored" it up in
photoshop to be the queen of hearts. I was very flattered that they are
using this picture since these invitations will be sent to several thousand
people in the art community...now that's some cool exposure. During the
night, I will be painting another model (who has yet to be selected) in front of
a hopefully adoring crowd. C'mon down.
No strings attached, not even any shipping charges. The CD is the "2001 Spring Sampler" from the website mp3.com and it features 100 songs from various artists. Now here's the coolest part...one of the songs is "Time For Me," the song that I co-wrote with Dawna Bradford and the title song from her latest CD. The song was chosen based on popularity and according to a message from mp3.com, "Indicators of popularity include earnings from Payback for Playback, ranking on our Free Music Charts and Artist "buzz" activity on our message boards, Stations and Channels. Finally, all songs were screened for overall production quality, songwriting prowess and content suitability. Your song made the final cut!" To get your copy of the CD, click on www.mp3.com/freecd . Supplies are limited to the first 250,000 I hear, so hurry while supplies last.
Another song that Dawna and I co-wrote together entitled "Just About You" has recently been recorded by an up and coming country artist in Nashville named Fran Michaels. Word has it that she is "shopping" for a record deal and playing this song for some of the top dogs in Music City. Good luck Fran. Dawna and I are counting on you and we're honored that you have chosen to record our song.
My artwork has been getting some media attention lately, but in the January 18th edition of the Arizona Republic newspaper there is an article that not only touts my bodypainting skills, but also jabs at my cooking prowess. Reporter Jose Garcia joined me for a body painting session with Meria Birchak and then wrote an article for the entertainment section of the paper called "The Rep". Since he writes for the food and dining section of the paper, I had to prepare a dish for him to critique. You've got to read the article to realize how pathetic my cooking experience is. The only time I prepare a dish is when I want to have something other than chips at a party (unless you consider calling Dominoes "preparing a dish"). You can find the article at http://www.azcentral.com/rep/dining/articles/0118bohemian18.html . OK, so there's probably no chance of me becoming a famous chef, but I'm pretty proud of the wetsuit bodypainting that was completed that same day. You can find this picture on my bodypainting page. Meria is a fantastic model to work with since she is a natural at posing without direction and she is very patient. To top it off, I think you'll agree that she is very beautiful. Meria and I first worked together at the Culture of Our Underground show in November. If you get a copy of this months Java Magazine you can see a picture of her in the "pyramid" bodypaint that I applied that night (yipee, more press).
-As mentioned in last months newsletter, I had the opportunity to paint 6 models over the New Year's Eve weekend for the jungle themed event at Axis-Radius. Several of the pictures are on-line now and several more will be added in the coming months. Unfortunately, some of them were not documented with quality photographs due to the dim lighting, so I guess I'll have to paint on them again sometime. On the other hand, there are some pictures that came out phenomenal, if I dare say so myself. I only have them on slides but plan to scan them to the website soon...your gonna love 'em, I promise.
-My family and I have closed on our new house in the Ahwatukee region of Phoenix. As of the writing of this newsletter we are about half way moved in and I'm about to go off-line until the computer gets reconnected to the @home service down there. As everyone knows, moving kinda' sucks, but it is pretty exciting at the same time. For the first time in my life, I will have my own pool (i.e. pool party coming soon). I will also be setting up my home studio again so maybe the musical muse will be visiting again sometime soon (i.e. who wants to co-write?).
-Allow me to introduce to you a talent that I heard several years ago in a small Nashville songwriters cafe. His name is John Gregory and he was one of the first people that joined the Green Pages mailing list. I guess my newsletter has kept his interest since I mention some of our common friends from time to time (Chris St.Croix and Griffin). Anyway, he has updated me on what he has been up to and he's now in a band named Mostly John. I really liked the acoustic style that they have put together and you should go give their stuff a listen at http://www.mp3.com/mostlyjohn . Oh, and the added bonus, they are giving away some free tickets to the Nashville date for Vertical Horizon and Sister Hazel too! Tell 'em Mark sent ya'.
-I could go on and on, but I better save some for next month since it only has 28 days. Take care everyone and welcome to 2001!!!
Type at you next month,
